Introductory guide
What are core motivation and core fear?
Core motivation and fear describe what you repeatedly want to gain or avoid beneath surface behavior.
Core motivation is a recurring direction
It means a state you keep trying to maintain across situations, rather than a single goal or a momentary desire. Notice what needs to be secured for you to feel at ease, such as recognition, safety or autonomy.
Core fear is not a phobia
It does not mean you are always consciously afraid. It is closer to a state that feels threatening to you and that you automatically try to avoid or control.
Do not identify it from a single behavior
Making a plan can be about doing things correctly, appearing capable or reducing risk. It is important to look at the tension and expectations just before the action, rather than only its outcome.
Look back at an event
Write down what you worried about losing when making an important choice, and what brought relief when things went well. Recurring answers become clues for distinguishing candidates.
