Enneagram type 8 · Instinctive center
The one who stands firm
Type 8 quickly senses who is in control, what is unfair and where they or someone important to them is being encroached upon. What matters is not simply having a forceful personality, but a motivation to protect their own life rather than be controlled by others.
Their strong energy appears as protection and decisiveness, but they may allow themselves to show only greater strength in order to hide vulnerability.
Core motivation
To have control over their own life and the strength to protect themselves and those they value.
Core fear
To avoid becoming vulnerable to control or exploitation, and being unfairly encroached upon.
Where attention goes
Their attention goes to the balance of power, hidden intentions, unfairness, who has the right to decide and how far they can push.
Common patterns in everyday life
- They are more comfortable speaking directly than speaking vaguely or indirectly.
- When they feel something is unfair, they may put raising the issue ahead of its cost to the relationship.
- Their energy sometimes rises in difficult situations.
- They may feel uncomfortable asking for help or showing weakness.
In relationships
When they feel someone is one of their people, they try to protect them strongly and take responsibility. But protection intended to preserve the other person's autonomy may become mixed with control based on the belief that deciding for them is what keeps them safe.
In work and tasks
They show strong abilities in making firm decisions, negotiation, crisis response and responsible decision-making. They may feel intense frustration with excessively slow procedures or an attitude of avoiding responsibility.
When strengths are expressed well
They step in to make decisions that cannot be postponed. They speak directly and confront issues that no one else will raise. They step forward to protect the people they care about.
When automatic reactions become rigid
When pushing hard becomes the only way to feel safe, they read the other person's different pace as weakness or avoidance. Fear and hurt are hidden behind anger.
Types that can be easy to confuse
Spending time comparing the descriptions with your own experience matters more than the assessment result.
